Acne Triggers: Pressure and Friction

For someone who is acne prone, anything that rubs, constricts, keeps prolonged pressure, or keeps the skin sweaty and moist will most likely be experiencing some acne problems. This is known as acne mechanica.

What Causes Acne Mechanica?

Any sort of repeated pressure, friction, and manipulation on an area of skin can cause a breakout. Examples of this can include:

  • sports helmets with chinstraps that rub against the skin
  • chin acne caused by constantly propping the chin on the hand
  • waistline acne caused by wearing too tight of a belt
  • acne prone sufferers who wear glasses may experience lesions where the frames rub against the skin
  • sleeping with one side of the face constantly touching the pillow
  • acne eruptions underneath a cast
  • sitting in tight, wet bathing suits for long periods of time

If there is any area that is constantly breaking out and nothing you do can clear it, you may want to check and see if there is any friction or rubbing taking place. Determine if your sports gear or clothing is causing it. If you break out on one side of the cheek, check your sleep patterns and see what side you most commonly sleep on. Making these simple adjustments will give your skin one less excuse to break out.
