A common misconception about acne is that the red marks left behind after a breakout are scars. This is not true. Your red marks, or hyperpigmentation, are not scars. They will actually heal and go away in several months.
How do these marks form? When a pimple is inflamed, the skin cells will receive a message to start producing more melanin, which is what pigments the skin. Hyperpigmentation is simply the trauma left behind by an acne lesion. When we see a person with hyperpigmentation, we know that their skin is still very active and breakouts occur all the time.
In order to prevent hyperpigmentation, the goal is to to catch the pimple before it becomes inflamed and treat it then. The best method is to ice the area for about 10 minutes at least once a day when you first start feeling it erupt. Once the pus begins to form, it’ll most likely leave behind a red mark.
The key is to be patient when it comes to letting these marks fade. Remember that they aren’t permanent! They will go away. You could end up spending a fortune on treatments that you don’t actually need.
